You’ve got an interview! Now what? Here’s how to ace it. Prep for success.
Firstly, if you have a disability make sure you tell the employer. They can make reasonable adjustments for your interview.
Preparation is key. Do some online research to find out about the company. Look up who will be interviewing you. Use your knowledge in your interview to really impress. Remind yourself of the things you’ve done that show how great you would be at this new job. Write them down and take them with you. It’s good to show you’ve done your homework! Pick something smart to wear. Not too smart, not too casual. Just right.
Finally, make sure you’ve planned your route so you won’t be late. Your interview starts as soon as you walk through the door. Any chance to have a friendly, positive interaction with someone is part of the interview. From the person who makes the coffee to the CEO, everyone deserves respect. How you treat people on the day can be the difference between you getting the job or not. So, put your phone away, this is the time for making a great impression and not for mindless scrolling!
Your name is called. You’re in the interview room. Showtime! Try to relax. Remember, they want you to do well! Look in the direction of the interviewer as much as possible and take your time answering questions. Take a deep breath then go for it! If you are feeling nervous about this bit, check out our Being a STARR template to plan out examples of why you’d be great for the job. Then sell yourself!
At the end of the interview they’ll ask you if you have any questions. Prepare a question in advance about the role or the company. Then ask when they expect to make a decision about who to hire. This shows you’re keen! Say thank you and you’re done.
Almost… Make sure you stand out. A great way to be memorable is to send an email as soon as you get home. Thank them for their time, say how much you’d like to work there and that you are looking forward to hearing from them.
Got the job? Congratulations! Make sure you find out what you need to bring on your first day.
Not got it this time? No problem. Ask the employer for feedback so you know how to up your game.
Good luck!
